Japon_HMNI_Insta-PUFF-01

Name: Japon
Crew: VLOK & WMD
City/Country: Barcelona, Spain
When did you start writing? I started writing with this name in early 2002.

What’s graffiti for you? It is an inseparable part of my life, something that surrounds me and defines me as a person. I can’t think of my life without graffiti, it makes me different than the rest of the people and has given me a lot of amazing experiences since the beginning. Drawing and painting are my passions.

Influences? Everything and everyone around me influences me, but I always try to make a concept personal and interpret it through my own point of view.

Tell us about your city, how is life and graffiti there? Life is calm and relaxed, Barcelona is a city for tourists. Personally I have a hate/love relationship with my city, I hate the government/police´s strong repression against young people and the permissibility of other things. It is a nice city to live in, but I couldn´t stay here too long without travelling outside. Graffiti is totally illegal in the city but the government promotes useless “free walls” or events where rich kids do their “art”…

What keeps you still writing? It is the only thing I know how to do… it makes me feel free and I need it.

What first made you interested in graffiti and how did you end up on that track? I have been drawing since I could remember, initially just comics. One day a friend asked me to do a character with a spray next to his letters. This is how I discover graffiti. Then I learned the real deal was the letters, trying to do different letters everytime, trying to be different, this is a personal target for me… and sometimes it is not easy.

What trends are you seeing now in the graffiti world that you don’t like? It is not a graffiti trend, it is a global world trend. When I started mobile phones didn´t exist, internet or graffiti spray paint or caps either. Everything was research, hard and long and in the end when you managed to do something you could be proud of it… you could really enjoy it, because of the effort it cost you to complete it…. Nowadays everything is easy, and most people don’t appreciate the value of it all. It is a global trend.

What do you do when you’re not painting? Drawing? Jejejej I have a normal life, work, kids, a wife… but always my life revolves around graffiti.

How would you describe your style? I don’t know… it is an evolution of my life. I can say it is like me, funny sometimes, sometimes serious, informal and free of rules, in some aspect classic, changing, experimenting and nonconformist.

Can you remember the first piece you did? Sure! It was a train tunnel in the early 90’s.

Future plans? Travelling, growing with my kids and painting more than before!

Do you adapt your pieces and tags to the spot/surface? Yes, surface is a very important part of the piece.

What do you think about the new generation of writers in your city? They are the future… I have seen various generations of writers everywhere and always new generations are more active and stronger than the ones before. When I look around and see that old are tired and lazy I find energy in the new generation, I prefer to be next to them… less talk, more painting!

What are the best and worst aspects of graffiti? Travelling, partnership, learning, discovering a different world outside the common life and money. I don´t find negative aspects of graffiti, even when you are in a bad situation or in trouble it is a good experience in the end.

Who do you paint for? Me and myself only.

What writers have inspired you? I learn a lot from all my friends. If I must mention some, they will be Amigo, Trojan, Rallie, Aryz, Kaos, Porno, Os Gemeos and the VLOK band…

Can you ever feel tired of graffiti? Can you ever feel tired of eating?!

What do you hope people will think and feel when they see your stuff? It doesn´t matter what they would think, as long as they think something… anything!
