Hello My Name Is: Ojey 80

Ojey_Tune_HMNI_Insta-PUFF-01

Name: Ojey 80
Crew: CHOSEN FEW
City/Country: Hamburg, Germany
When did you start writing? 1994

What’s graffiti for you? It’s a quick vacation from daily business and a lot more…
Influences? The things is see and the people that i’am surrounded by every day, good and bad…
Tell us about your city, how is life and graffiti there? Hamburg is a great place to live. Close to the Sea with a big Harbor, which automatically makes a great mix nationalities and cultural influences. That goes along with writers and styles. Good quality and a big variety of styles.
What keeps you still writing? It’s fun! it’s not something digital, the endless story of bending, shaping, failing and winning. It’s one of the few things where you are totally free to do as you like.
What first made you interested in graffiti and how did you end up on that track? I was always drawing stuff when i was a child, when i was 14 i used to travel to different bigger cities by train on my summer vacations, i noticed all the colorful trains and pieces going by. I instantly went to a comic store in Hannover because i knew that they had a book with graffiti in it, my parents gave me some pocket money for the trip to buy some new clothes, but i decided to use it to buy that book. The next day i did my first piece which basically was a copy of one of the pieces inside the book 😉
What trends are you seeing now in the graffiti world that you don’t like? Trends come and go… and usually after a while they come up again with a little twist. There’s not really something i don’t like, it always depends on how you use it.
What do you do when you’re not painting? Besides working as designer i’m trying to travel as much as i can over the year, but not necessarily for painting.
How would you describe your style? Keep it classy while drifting through galaxy.
Can you remember the first piece you did? Of course! it’s still there, under a bridge in my old hometown, i still visit it from time to time. Got some crappy cans at a local hardware store and went to the spot 3 days in a row, got busted by some guy, but nothing happened.
Future plans? More traveling, i’m going to indonesia in about two weeks.
Do you adapt your pieces and tags to the spot/surface? When i’m painting hall pieces, the surrounding isn’t that important to me. It’s more the size/surface of the wall, the space left and right from the piece and so on. But when i do throw-ups or whatever, i try to capture and incorporate more of the surrounding.
What do you think about the new generation of writers in your city? There are quite a few good people in Hamburg old and new.
What are the best and worst aspects of graffiti? The vacation from your daily life, is the best part of it, just focusing on the execution of your weird ideas, meeting good people, the traveling. Can’t see much bad aspects.
Who do you paint for? On one side there is the the ego part, where i do it for myself, but at the same time i think it’s something positive for a lot of people.
What writers have inspired you? From old legends to young gunners, to many to tell.
Can you ever feel tired of graffiti? Not yet!
What do you hope people will think and feel when they see your stuff? At least it would be nice if they find something in it they like. I believe that you can see when people put their soul and hard work in what they love to do. And the fact of -creating- something hopefully gives a good message to people…
