MONOCHROME is a series of graffiti videos, all with a black-and-chrome feeling, by Spraydaily.com. Simple short videos featuring one writer and three cans in each episode. One chrome piece on one clean wall by one selected graffiti writer for each episode.
Name: Chas Crew: LoveLetters When did you start writing? I did my first piece in 1989.
What’s graffiti for you?
It’s a lot of different things! In the past it was a way for me to be seen by other people. Now it is my work.. But more important it’s also still my hobby. And it’s a way to escape, a way to challenge myself, a way to communicate.
Every good piece of art I see influences me.
What keeps you still writing?
The urge to create something.
What first made you interested in graffiti and how did you end up on that track?
I think at that moment in life I needed to be seen by other people. And being part of a “secret community” also sounded very tempting. Besides that it was also a lot of fun of course!
What trends are you seeing now in the graffiti world that you don’t like?
There’s always stuff that I don’t like but I try not to be bothered by it.
How would you describe your style?
I like it when people are able to read my letters. Besides that the connections between the letters are very important to me and I try to come up with interesting color combo’s.
Can you remember the first piece you did?
Yes. I felt like the king of the neighborhood!
Becoming better in what I do.
Do you adapt your pieces and tags to the spot/surface?
Definitely! It’s all about the communication between a piece and it’s surroundings.
What do you do when you’re not painting?
Spending time with my family, drinking beers with friends, Seeing concerts and movies.
What are the best and worst aspects of graffiti?
Friendships. Meeting interesting people from all over the world. Visiting interesting places. Challenging myself. Not getting a lot of sleep.
What writers have inspired you?
Too many to mention. Some of them inspired me style-wise. Others inspired me by their mentality or philosophy.
Can you ever feel tired of graffiti?
Well… It hasn’t happened in the past 25 years… So I’m starting to think it might never happen:-)
What do you hope people will think and feel when they see your stuff?
When I see a very good piece it makes me happy. I hope I am making other people happy too.
