For the sixth Podcast they talked to Nychos from Vienna, who has just returned from Los Angeles, his second home. We talk to him about his current projects in San José and Spain and the anatomy that can be found in all of his work. The probably best known graffiti artist from Austria likes to cut the Barbie doll, Spongebob, the Mona Lisa or other well-known figures from art and the mainstream and visualizes this impressively. A couple of weeks ago, the LORDS Crew was invited to contribute a painting to the Mural Harbor in Linz, one of Austria’s most innovative spots for Urban Art and muralism. The LORDS (Legends Of Rare Designs), founded in 1986 in San Jose, is a collective of Graffiti artists from California with members in Austria. To strengthen their special connection, austrian crew members Fader, Nychos, Phekt, Shed and Shue77 invited Graffiti legend Quake from San Francisco to paint this large scale mural together with them. ”Lords Of The Red Dragon” is the bursting outcome of a small crew reunion and celebrates the artists’ mutual love to Graffiti.

Dissecting a polar bear is a 4 day mission – at least that’s what Nychos proved last week in Vienna. As part of our 10 year anniversary weeks and right before the world premiere of The Deepest Depths of the Burrow Nychos spray-painted a giant polar bear on a 24 meter wall. So far, it’s his largest mural in our home town. That’s what we call celebrating properly.

The Austrian urban art and graffiti illustrator Nychos was born in 1982 in Styria, Austria where he grew up in a hunting family. Getting confronted by the anatomy of dead animals at an early age and being an 80’s kid with an interest for cartoons and heavy metal ended up being some of the ingredients which inspired him when he started graffiti and painting at the age of 18. Over the years he developed a distinctive style which stands out – his dissections and cross sections of human and animal bodies are easily recognised. The focus and reinterpretation of dissected motives in a combination of colorful outlines can be seen as his branding. He is well known for his huge and technically outstanding art pieces in the urban environment as well as several gallery exhibitions. In 2013 he had solo shows in Detroit (Inner State Gallery), New York (Mighty Tanaka) and Turin (Galo Art Gallery), besides traveling the world, painting in over 15 different cities and participating in Art Basel Miami Beach, Pow Wow Hawaii and many other events. In 2014 he had two solo shows in San Francisco (Fifty24SF) and Singapore (Mighty Jaxx) amongst a set of festivals, events, conferences and fairs. He’s currently seen as one of the most sought-after artists of the street art scene. Nychos will be part of the Knotenpunkt 14 Urbanart Festival in Hamburg

Two days ago it was the opening for Nychos solo show “Street Anatomy” at Fifty24SF Gallery. Connected to the show Nychos also made a number of big murals around San Francisco. Juxtapoz Magazine hooked up with the artist to ask him some questions. Read the full interview at Juxtapoz.

Why did you start making art?
I always wanted to be a comic artist or character designer because I like to laugh at myself when I draw. Art has to be funny but it also has to give something back to you. It always has to tell a story. The hard part is to find something you want to talk about with your art. For me it was always there, but for a long time I didn’t realize what it was.

So that’s where the anatomy comes in?
Yup! I grew up in the south of Austria and I needed to keep warm in the winter, so I killed a deer, cut it up and slept in its carcass. Ha! No, let’s be serious. I was always interested in how the body worked. I was so into skeletons–my dad and grandpa were both hunters, so looking at a deer skeleton was daily business. It was normal to me.

Austrian graffiti writer Nychos passed through London last month and even with loads of rain, overzealous council workers buffing a piece on a private wall (within hours of it being finished) and several days dealing with a mysterious illness, he managed to paint some amazing murals.
