The graffiti magazine Stains Magazine celebrates 5 years and 10 issues and just as previous releases, they keep it ‘Strictly Swedish biz’.
The content consists of mixed walls, freight trains, spraycations, Swedish trains as well as commuter trains and subways from Stockholm. Issue 10 of course also contains special features, this time with Wtass [RTS K432 FJU] – also known as the Swedish meme king @tassensmemes, west coast-based LiL crew offers fresh analog cut-and-paste collage, FUE crew from Stockholm offers on 100% trains and technically skilled Dekis [MOAS TWC] offers burners on both walls and trains.

As if this weren’t enough, the 10:th issue has been expanded to 100(!) pages, with four surprise mini features hidden inside AND the cover is designed together with one of Sweden’s biggest names right now – Triss [BST NFC GG]. Has anyone seen Såg 45? Trailer for exhibition in Stockholm, Sweden.

Saturday 28.03.20, 5 pm – 9 pm, Slathusområdet.

I sit in the back seat of the Såg’s old Volvo. This is the first time I’ve really met him. Before that, we have only greeted quickly a few times. It’s fun for me because I’ve been curious about the new generation of graffiti painters from Umeå. I saw traces of him as I cycled around Västerslätt, Umeå’s most beautiful industrial area. It struck me that it is an odd name he chose.

We are now on our way out to look for a surveillance camera at a train stand. Sågen is convinced that it sits on a specific pole in the corner of one of the train halls. It should apparently be small, black and it should flash a red light. We squeeze through bushes and snows, wherever we go there is no reason to be if you are not interested in painting the subway. Sågen moves accustomed and keeps away branches that run the risk of whipping me in the face. When we have arrived he points out the pole where the camera would have been located but notes that the camera is not there any more.

“But”, I say, “there are two other cameras sitting in the same direction.”

“So they”, he says, “no, they don’t work”.

“How do you know that?” I ask.

“We have passed them a lot of times and nothing ever happens.” Såg responds as if it were the most obvious thing in the whole world.

I stand there thinking how fun the graffiti culture is, how to interpret, speculate, guess and try to understand things you have no idea just to give yourself the feeling of control.

In forty years, graffiti has grown from a local New York subculture into a worldwide phenomenon with its own heroes and business models. Embraced as urban decoration or buffed by all means, graffiti has escaped a slow death, mainly thanks to the internet. Actions in the real world are increasingly carried out and documented with their digital distribution in mind, leading to refreshing self-reflection and an emphasis on the performative nature of writing.

Don’t tell the taggers, but graffiti has evolved into a mature, varied artform that doesn’t shy away from difficult themes and that combines resistance against repression with a contagious hacker mentality. Meanwhile, the kick of illegality continues to be an important motivation, inextricably linked to kudos and street credibility.??

With #ViralVandals MU presents an exhibition about the second life of graffiti. Going virtually viral will replace the street in the quest for even greater visibility. New forms of expression emerge and the DNA of the scene changes irreversibly. A monument to the international, online graffiti community—young creators and global icons—in Eindhoven.
