Name: Soviet
Crew: NSF
City/Country: Pennsylvania, USA

When did you start writing? I started writing in the early 2000’s.

What’s graffiti for you? It’s a hobby/lifestyle, whatever you want to call it. It’s an outlet for creativity, fun & aggression.

Influences? My crew influences me a lot, whether its encouraging me or busting my balls, it’s motivation. Comics, graffiti, the internet, old movies, MAD magazine, these are all influences.

Tell us about your city, how is life and graffiti there? I started painting in Pittsburgh, which received notoriety for handing out harsh sentences to graffiti writers. Life is good though, I get to travel and paint so I can’t complain.

What keeps you still writing? It’s fun. Anything from catching a white out tag to doing a whole-car, it’s fun.

What first made you interested in graffiti and how did you end up on that track? A lot of my friends were writing, so I joined in the fun.

What trends are you seeing now in the graffiti world that you don’t like? I really can’t think of anything specific. Trends seem to come and go every few years.

What do you do when you’re not painting? I work and have a few other hobbies.

Is it important that people see your stuff and you get recognition? Not always, but most of the time, yes.

How would you describe your style? I don’t know, its all over the place. I try to keep it simple for the most part.

Can you remember the first piece you did? Oh yeah. I painted a few really bad pieces in 1996, the first Soviet piece was in 2002.

Future plans? Of course!
