I was never really in to graffiti. That is, I’ve been interested in what now is called street art since I can remember, and I always noticed graff, but I prefer tags and bombing to pieces. Then I came to Sao Paulo, and well, BOOM! This city is covered in all types of public space take over and graffiti is a huge part of it. SP is home to some really great writers, and in my opinion graff here is creative and evolving in a way I haven’t seen in other places. Maybe it’s just that my eyes where opened, maybe it’s that reality for writers here is different than in the northern parts of the world. Graff is somewhat accepted by people and society here, it’s part of the culture to paint houses in bright colors and police don’t really have time or care to stop you if you’re doing a piece in the middle of the day. Look like you’re supposed to be there and nobody will mind, not even if you’re doing a huge piece in the middle of a busy highway! If you have the opportunity to come here, do it! There’s really no place like it, the streets speak loud and the people here are among the friendliest I’ve encountered! Come here, paint, bomb, drink caipirinhas and experience the puls of a city that truly never rests!

After traveling around South America for 3 months, I finally reached Sao Paulo and I was instantly amazed. Not only is the city full of Pixaçao, street art, murals and graffiti, it’s also bombed with world class hands. I found tags by writers from all over the world and it was great to finally see all those “Paulista” hands I’ve been hearing so much about live. For me, tags are the most beautiful and interesting part of graffiti, so I was in heaven! I found some new favorites and I fell in love with the Sao Paulo bombed doors, so fucking stunning! This city is one that truly never sleeps, it’s cosmopolitan in a way that can only be compared to New York City and the people are one of the friendliest I’ve ever met.
There’s always something going on, graffiti events, art show openings or just the traditional Sunday painting walls the whole day and drinking beer thing. Sao Paulo is where you need to visit if you’re into any sort of public space take over, incredibly inspiring and hospitable. I can’t recommend you enough to travel here, you won’t regret it and you’ll never want to leave!

TagsAndThrows Vol.001
While working on the book TagsAndThrows vol. 001 we decided to make a short documentary about Thomas Karl-Johan Gunnarsson aka OKOK, the man behind TagsAndThrows. We joined him for a walk around Stockholm and talked about bombing, Instagram, internet fame and navigating through cities with the help of vandalism.

TagsAndThrows Vol.001

In this volume, the first-ever book by TagsAndThrows, we have collected a selection of personal photos by Thomas Karl-Johan Gunnarsson a.k.a. OKOK, the man behind TagsAndThrows. The best hand styles from New York, São Paulo, Stockholm and Copenhagen, documented in black and white, showing not only the styles, but also the atmosphere and street life of those cities. The book spans over 136 pages and features a lot of well-known signatures like False, Klops, Ja, Guns, Katsu, Pear, Tomcat, Easer, Os Gemeos, Sliks, Alone and many more.

About TagsAndThrows
It all started during a trip to New York a few years ago. In the beginning TagsAndThrows was just a an easy way to share nice photos of OKOKs pictures of tags for friends via Instagram, but after two years the feed has grown into a full concept with almost 83.000 followers on Instagram, 5 short documentaries on Youtube, fanzines and now a book. The concept is easy, like the art form itself – the most beautiful tags in the world, documented in the most beautiful way possible. The monochrome images captures the simplicity and rawness of street bombin and has become the trademark for TagsAndThrows.
