Insights Stuttgart Trainwriting, an over one and a half hour graffiti documentary about the scene in Stuttgart from 1992-2022. Super well produced documentary with nice music and interviews (In German but the auto translated subtitles on youtube works pretty well).

Access is achieved via a double perspective. On the one hand, via a classic graffiti film aesthetic, which focuses on filming moving trains and their colorful productions. Stuttgart is considered a charismatic graffiti metropolis and INSIGHTS portrays the local S-Bahn and U-Bahn lines in a pointed way and with great music. On the other hand, the collective of authors is driven by a documentary interest, which is reflected in numerous cross-generational interviews with various actors who were or are active in the period under review (1992-2022). However, the real attraction lies elsewhere. Through the documentary perspective, the film succeeds in tracing the development of a ‘local’ graffiti scene in an exemplary manner, the metamorphosis of a subculture that otherwise pulsates covertly and likes to evade observation. It reveals factors and conditions that are conducive to a burgeoning graffiti scene and its consolidation, as well as challenges (e.g. law enforcement, surveillance) that put the actors involved and their work processes under pressure and provoke creative reactions. Including commuters, S-trains and metros, the movie shows lots of historic train models in classic spots. Several earlier works by writers who later on became legends can be seen here and there, too. A heartwarming trip down memory lane.

Peter Stelzig has documented the Berlin graffiti scene since 1998, and since 2002 with a focus on painted trains. With his book project “Analog vs. Digital – trainwriting Artphotography, Berlin 2002-2016 “is not only its own development are presented as a photographer, but also a glimpse into the tension of analogue and digital photography techniques are granted. It focuses on the pictorial representation of differences and the possibility range of mainly analogue photography. Texts to explain, support and critical reflection of media developments are an integral part of the work. Reference is made not only on the small 1 × 1 photography and equipment, but also special techniques such as Double exposure or Lomography displayed and explained. In addition, special films are put under the microscope, including slide (cross-process), black and white, infrared and special effect films. Sounds like a photography guide, but also a high-quality, slightly different photo book of the events on the Berlin underground and S-Bahn trains over 14 years has been documented. One of Bewegründe this book is to give this special touch that Photography is probably the most important medium in the graffiti or trainwriting scene. Instead of the blind use of auto-program should be stimulated to think outside the box in order to increase the diversity and quality of the photos in all sorts of media and guide the Writer and spotters to deal more with the subject of photography.
