Somnambulism [som-nam-byuh-liz-uh-m] Noun: A condition that is characterised by walking while asleep or in a hypnotic trance.

‘Somnambulists’ is a six part film series that follows the actions of RETRO & MAIDE on their recent winter adventure around Italy. The series takes a fresh approach to filming, editing and track selection which results in high-end filming gear, drone footage, slow cuts, and bleeding edge bass music taking you on a journey so intimate you’ll feel like you’re sitting on the tracks eating spaghetti bolognese.

In this episode, RETRO and MAIDE hit up the northern Italian city of Genoa on New Years Eve and watched some security guards instead of fireworks.

“It was New Years Eve and we arrived in Genoa in the late afternoon. After getting our bags into the hotel room, we rummaged through all the paint to sort out a few kits to take with us. Once that had been sorted we walked down to the yard just to have a quick look at what we were working with. We had some information about the spot but not the fine details. So we decided to split up. Maide watching security at the station, and Tom keeping an eye on the spot from the main road. I decided to squeeze through some broken bars on the window frame and through the broken glass to get in. I knew of a sensor in the yard but wasn’t sure exactly where it was. Well I figured that out quickly when the alarm started blaring on the roof only a couple of metres away from me. I jumped back through the window, ran across the road and watched to see how long until security would come. Thirty minutes later they eventually walked from the station, through the tunnel and in to the yard. We were about to head back to the hotel when I noticed five writers heading to the same spot, so I ran over and had a chat with them. They told me they had already done the spot the night before and were just about to do it again. So Maide and I ran back to the hotel, got our paint and went straight back. One of the guys squeezed through the window, walked through the yard in a different direction and opened up the door and we all hudled inside. Once we were in, we could see there was not a lot of room to paint on all the trains. So we had to all split up and paint small areas in different spots. I mentioned to the Spanish writers not to go on the opposite side of the train as I knew there was a sensor with an alarm. About five minutes in, one of the guys that didn’t understand English too well, walked straight through the sensor. With the alarm blarring we all bailed out through the door. We ran across the road and watched from a distance as the security turned up. Being New Years Eve and close to midnight, we decided to get something to eat while everyone started letting off their fireworks. To give the spot some time to chill, the eight of us crammed into the writers car with all the paint and headed to their hostel to chill. We hung out there for about an hour then walked back out to the car to find it had been towed, including all the kits of paint! After an hour of trying to figure out where the car was and then finding out it wasn’t possible to get the car back till the 2nd of January. We needed to head back to our hotel with everyone and grab more paint to finish the seven panels before morning. We ended up finishing them all off before sunrise of the New Year; then ended up venturing back to the yard after lunch with Tom to do a cheeky crew panel next to the sensor before the drive down the Italian coast.”

In this episode, RETRO and MAIDE light up a metro hanger in Rome and get straight to business.

“It was a fun city to adventure through. On any given day you’d see lines and lines of tourists queuing up to understand more about the ancient tunnels of secrets and precious landmarks, and there we were, with free access to the city‘s filthy train tunnels and many lay-ups.

One night we headed over to a hatch we had previously checked, we picked up another unfamiliar Australian writer on the way but when we got there we found that the hatch had been jammed closed. It was pretty suss. So we contemplated what to do and went for a walk. On one end of the street, a police car had stopped and tried to talk to our friend; on the other end, I noticed a man and woman sitting the their car facing the hatch – also suss. 

We walked the block, I hid my gloves and as we strolled to a takeaway shop we noticed another police car, then another, and another. As we slowly strolled back to the car after getting a quick snack, the police cars kept coming. There ended up being nine in total. Then, we were stopped by two police cars. “Hey, do you guys do graffiti?” We were a bit stunned and thought it was hilarious. “No? What do you mean graffiti?” The police man then imitated spray-painting. They pointed to our car, and we agreed, “yes it’s ours…” The cops then asked us to open the car… We literally had a boot of at least 80 BOXES (not tins) of paint in there. Retro slipped into the front seat, put a used but empty SD card into his takeaway container, continued to eat, then placed it in the bin. Smooth… We popped the boot and the police were stunned. Laughing to each other. We said we did ‘mural art.’ Gobsmacked that we had no photos of trains or “murals” they pulled aside Retro to question him as to what he was doing, he ‘so called’ promised that we hadn’t been doing anything wrong. The police man turned to his team, “Hey, he promised.” turned back to Retro and said “Ok” with a smile. 

As it turns out, a promise and a conversation about a recent Australian trip were good enough reasons to stop the search. As the police drove off, the cop turned to us giving us the thumbs up and shouted “Bondi Beach!!”-MAIDE.

When did you start writing? Received my pen license in ’06, 10 years after pac died #rip

What’s graffiti for you? The word graffiti derives from the Italian word “graffio” which means “a scratch”. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think about that every time I paint, which is why I like to scratch the wall a little before I start. For tradition’s sake.

Influences? Howard Arkley. Crazy use of colour, would scratch his canvases before he painted.

Tell us about your city, how is life and graffiti there? The baby boomers are slowly destroying the most beautiful city in the world. They dont believe in coexisting with other generations, their art is bland, their world view is restrictive and the only hope for our city is their impending death.

What keeps you still writing? Boys in blue, graffiti know-it alls and the dream of a boomerless Sydney. #acab #kabb #ストリートアートのおもちゃ

What first made you interested in graffiti and how did you end up on that track

What trends are you seeing now in the graffiti world that you don’t like? Words starting with R, Arrows, Bevels, Top Knots and the Dad Bod.

How would you describe your style? Curvy, in the traditional sense. ample bosom, trim waist and round butt.

Who do you paint for? Painting is a lot like fucking. And a broader stroke would be “what” rather than “who”. So, what do I fuck for, you ask? I fuck for the right to stay up late. i fuck for the right to eat kebabs after midnight. i fuck for the toy who pay waved his 36 pack of Copics. i fuck for the boy who used his friends name in a infringement notice because he was under pressure. i fuck for the girl whos fucking the toy who pay waved his 36 pack of Copics.

Can you remember the first piece you did? Yep. Remember like it was yesterday. Struggled to get it on, Thin walls, Parents came home early, and quickest piece ive ever done.

Future plans? Property ownership, Goal weight of 92.5kg.

What do you do when you’re not painting? I sell calippos and coconut water on bondi beach.

What are the best and worst aspects of graffiti? Trains and Lames.

What writers have inspired you? Set, The Nos, Pud, Sofs, Slor, Ekaer, Charles Dickens.

Can you ever feel tired of graffiti? Writing here about my graffiti makes me tired.

What do you hope people will think and feel when they see your stuff? I want people to think about why I’m doing this, And where i got my 36 pack of copics from.
