Why talk to a gallery owner? Quite simply because there are now a lot of graffiti writers who are already exhibiting with their work or are planning to do so at some point. But what do you show in an exhibition? Is graffiti from the street and train yards simply transferable to the white cube? We talked about this and much more with Christoph Tornow in his Golden Hands gallery in Hamburg Mitte.

Christoph has had art in public space for many years – he always uses a wide variety that the genre offers. The genre is often not really defined, or can be. This art form is sometimes just too young for that. Exhibitions with artists such as Finsta, Mode2, Mason, Felipe Pantone, Moses & Taps or Rage include not only illustrative and conceptual works, but also classic paintings, sculptures and installations.

Podcast Number 16 from I Love Graffiti is about exactly this variety, background and motives of curation in a gallery and what chances you can actually have in the art market if you retire from the street to a studio as a graffiti writer. Of course Christoph is one of many gallery owners in Germany and Europe, but he makes it relatively clear exactly what it is all about if you take this step. An exciting glimpse behind the scenes of a gallery that has been dealing with graffiti art for many years.

In November 2015 three creatives traveled to Paramaribo, the bustling capital of a lesser known nation on the northeastern coast of South America. They arrived with a simple goal, to combine forces in a series of experiments, mixing film, light and muralism.

Felipe Pantone is a visual artist based in Valencia, Spain. His work explores themes of futurism, technology, glitches, and the advancement of the species. Strong contrasts, vivid colors, effects, and the use of mixed medium and varied technique combine to impact strongly on the viewer. Obsessed with speed and forward motion, Felipe has taken his large scale mural work worldwide, having painted walls in 5 continents.

Rebecca Smith is a multidisciplinary creative based in the UK. Her project Stylus explores progressive forms of combining projection mapping with hand crafted image. In a live performance, both elements evolve and interact, to create a canvas of movement, light and paint.

Selina Miles is a filmmaker from Australia. She specialises in the exploration graffiti culture.

Selina Miles is a video director from Brisbane, Australia. Together, they celebrate their love of the internet and facts in this short film. Directed and Edited by Selina Miles. Felipe Pantone’s body of work spans from graffiti to kinetic art. Strong contrasts, vivid colors, effects, and the use of mixed medium and varied technique combine to impact strongly on the viewer. What really intrigues is not the striking nature of his work, but the artist’s journey to discover this aesthetic. We live in a time where more images are produced than can possibly be seen, and the impetus for an artist to stand out from the others is stronger than ever. Information flows at an exponentially increasing rate, a leitmotif recurrent in Felipe Pantone’s compositions, his hyperactivity, working methods and his constant traveling around the world. It was during this travel he met Selina Miles, an Australian filmmaker who specializes in documenting graffiti and street art. With a deep love for new techniques, camera tricks and fast-paced, energetic short films, Selina accepted Felipe’s challenge of cramming as much information as possible into a 5 minute film. This video also serves as promotion for Felipe Pantone’s upcoming solo show “Stereodynamica” at Backwoods Gallery in Melbourne, Australia.

This is my first time in Chile and I was instantly impressed with the amount of graffiti and street art all over Santiago. The city is huge, but very welcoming, and walking through the neighborhoods Yungay, Bella Vista and Brazil my mind was blown! There’s so much variety of art, tags, throws, murals, pasteups, stencils, burners, pretty much everything! It’s a city where the walls truly speak, the public spaces are covered by political messages, art, cheering words for the city’s different teams and everything in between – Santiago is a city that inspires. Many residential houses have beautiful murals or small paintings on them, not many empty, boring white walls. It seems to me that the people of Santiago have a very high tolerance for graffiti and street art, they see it as a natural part of their city, something I wish was true in more cities of the world. If you have the chance to visit Santiago, go! You’ll see great art, eat delicious food and meet friendly people, and oh – there’s still plenty of wall space for you to cover!
