When they spoke to Daim two years ago for the documentary series “Rise Of Graffiti Writing” in the Hamburg Getting-Up Studio, you could already tell what an extensive book project this would be. An intensively researched publication devoted to the history of the Hamburg graffiti scene in the 1980s and 1990s: One City Is Colorful.

The publication will contain exclusive photo series and original quotes by active graffiti writers at the time, as well as scientific treatises by well-known authors that show graffiti as a widely networked subcultural phenomenon and at the same time provide information on practices for appropriating public urban space.

The four editors have been at home in the graffiti scene for more than 30 years, creating an authentic look at the beginnings of our culture, from which a global art form has developed. In over three years of research, mostly unpublished photos, sketches, materials and quotes from then active graffiti writers and their related fields of activity were compiled.

In addition to Daim, the team of editors also includes Frank Petering (Backspin Magazine), Davis (Beastie Boys Magazine) and Cario, a graffiti writer also from Hamburg, who dealt with the history of graffiti, especially in Hamburg, early on. We talked to him and Daim about the team, the idea behind the book, ongoing crowdfunding and research work as part of the Podcast series starting today. The 30-minute Podcast is illustrated with previews and photos.

Graffiti in Germany, Part 2: From Munich via Dortmund we go to Hamburg, where we meet Hesh, Daim and JBK. The writers of the first hour talk about their first contact with the graffiti culture and report on the styling syringe given to them by the Parisian King Bando. In ten episodes, the documentary series traces the rise of the graffiti movement: from New York in the 1970s to Amsterdam and Paris to Munich, from where the graffiti virus infected Europe from the 1980s onwards. In the last episode of our documentary series it says: Graffiti in Germany, Part 2: From Munich via Dortmund we go to Hamburg, where we meet Hesh and other writers of the first hour.
