Hello My Name Is: Qturbo79

Names: Qturbo’79 / Xn3Kk
Crews: MVP, NSA, ABC, ’79Rebels
City/Country: Amsterdam, The Netherlands
When did you start writing? 1993/1994
What’s graffiti for you?
Having a laugh and a good day out with friends, trying to find and express my own personal graff-style.
Influences?
Movies, record-sleeves, typography, paintings, music, architecture, comics, posters, flyers, daily news, mags, life.
Tell us about your city, how is life and graffiti there?
Amsterdam is the biggest city and capital of the Netherlands, graff has it roots starting in the 70’s and to me had a explosion of dope letter styles in the 80’s and early 90’s. To me these styles are still timeless and the base for my current lettering. Nowadays Amsterdam has many different crews consisting of international crew members, many different styles, lots of tourists and too few walls….
What keeps you still writing?
As long as I am enjoying the game and as long as I have the feeling i am personally progressing, I will continue writing!
What first made you interested in graffiti and how did you end up on that track?
I guess like a lot of people I was blown away after watching Style Wars at the art class of junior high. It was that same day I sketched my first piece on paper and I still watch Style Wars to get ideas.
What trends are you seeing now in the graffiti world that you don’t like?
To me personally I don’t mind, I don’t follow the trends. If I have to mention one, I’d have to say: less street art, more graffiti please!
What do you do when you’re not painting?
Listening to music, making beats, digging vinyl, working on mixtapes, reading… and I sketch a lot. I mean, really… A lot….
How would you describe your style?
Fancy lettering with an oldschool touch.
Can you remember the first piece you did?
yes that was In ’95 after checkin’ out this particular spot for weeks I did my first piece at night, at a illegal spot, at the back of a halfpipe at a local playground…. Hey, at least I wasn’t caught…
Future plans?
Would like to visit more European cities and paint!
Do you adapt your pieces and tags to the spot/surface?
No not really, I’d like to stick to my style no matter the surface.
What do you think about the new generation of writers in your city?
Some are talented and really up, it is nice to see new writers putting up new ideas, lets hope they keep the scene alive!
What are the best and worst aspects of graffiti?
To me the best part is probably painting a fresh new spot with good friends. The worst part is that Holland has such unpredictable weather. While painting in ur swimming trunks, rain can just surprise us here….
Who do you paint for?
I only paint for myself.
What writers have inspired you?
There are too many really. To name a few: Ashq, Noah, Keo, KoolHerz 131, Serve, Dondi, Skeme, Part1, Dez, and of course al lot of Dutch 80’s and 90’s graff writers.
Can you ever feel tired of graffiti?
No not really.
What do you hope people will think and feel when they see your stuff?
Holy jumpin’ jetfish!… This is iiiit…. This is iiiit!
