The Mindset of a Graffiti Writer

“There’s a fine line between a hobby and an addiction.”

That’s how one of the Easy Riders founders opens up, and by the end of the film you realise he means it literally. The Easy Riders are a Glasgow bomb crew, going since 1999, with work that’s turned up on every continent. The filmmaker spent months embedded with one of the founding members to get at the thing most graffiti docs skip past — not the paint, but the mentality it takes to still be doing this decades in.

A broken city is a writer’s city

Glasgow, in his words, is broken — and he says it almost fondly. It’s a city full of things that were meant to happen and didn’t: motorway links that stall out, rail lines that got started and then abandoned. Britain’s second-biggest rail network after London, and it used to be bigger, until the Beeching cuts of the 1960s took close to a third of the country’s railways off the map. What that leaves behind is a landscape of dead lines, shut stations, and forgotten track — which, if you’re a writer, reads less like decay and more like opportunity.

Not that it’s easy. He describes police pouring real money into graffiti — DNA-testing paint, building cases over an extra layer of colour on a wall. In Britain you can get done off forensics for a throw-up. That’s the backdrop the whole thing plays out against.

No two days the same

Ask him to describe his lifestyle and the answer is that there isn’t one — no routine, no steady job, but graffiti on his mind every single day. Different spot, different colours, different plan, always something new to figure out, money scraped together here and there. He’s quick to point out that anyone can do this: he knows writers who are scientists, architects, doctors, and writers who are none of those things at all. The door’s open to everyone.

He’s clear-eyed about how much that door has widened, too. In the ’80s it was underground and hard — you had to dig for it. Now it’s online, accessible, cool, and everybody wants in. He doesn’t say it with much nostalgia. It’s just the water the culture swims in now.

The mission

Then there’s the mission — a proper one, pre-planned and organised, aimed at a specific line, yard, or rooftop, built around risk and travel. The briefing happens the way a lot of things happen in Glasgow: over beers in a local boozer, working out who goes where and when the train comes in.

What the film doesn’t dress up is the danger. Painting panels down the side of trains means being where you shouldn’t be, when you shouldn’t be there, sometimes stepping over electrified rail where one wrong move ends very badly. The payoff is a piece most people will only ever half-see, flashing past a platform. To him, that’s the essence of it — tags, throw-ups, panels — and it’s what he enjoys most.

The part that sounds like addiction

This is where the title earns itself. He can’t stop, and he’s honest about it. His hand moves to tag when he’s in the shower. Every birthday he needs to paint something new; every new year, the same pull. He calls it habit, calls himself connected, says he’s consistent in a way he can’t switch off. Why stop, he asks, when it still gives him that buzz?

And then, quieter, the doubt: maybe the need itself is the problem, maybe he should learn to not feel it. He doesn’t resolve that tension, and the film is better for leaving it open. This is a man in his fourth decade of writing turning the question over in real time — is this the thing that freed me, or the thing that’s got me?

What it cost, and what it gave

He doesn’t pretend it came free. It’s strained relationships and friendships. He talks about wanting to settle down, having had a version of that once, and it not working out. The grass is always greener, he shrugs — and some people with the steady life seem to envy his anyway.

Set against the cost is a ledger he clearly believes came out ahead: bonds with people all over the world, some of the most genuine experiences of his life, the kind of thing nobody could put a price on. He did the first big wall piece in Scotland back in January 2005. He reckons he put Glasgow on the map, and he says it plainly — I did that. Somewhere along the line the habit turned into a vocation. He’s got a voice, and not using it, to him, would be the real failure.

Look beyond the paint

The filmmaker never set out to change anyone’s mind about graffiti. He wanted to show it honestly — what it is, and what it takes — then ask the viewer to look past the surface: what else can it tell you? His own answer is the strongest note in the film. In a world where the systems of control keep tightening year on year, a name on a wall is a small, stubborn reminder that we still get to choose — to do the thing we keep putting off, however big or small, even when everything’s stacked against us. It won’t shift the balance of power. It just proves no system of control is ever quite complete.

The rest, he figures, is a matter of time.
