Tell us a little bit about yourself?
My name is Greg, I’m from Canada but now living in London, UK.

How did you get into photography/videography?
I’ve always been attracted to photos and film. Growing up I began working on small film projects with friends and it kinda just kept growing from there.

How come you started photographing graffiti writers and the culture?
I was always around writers and as I started to explore and expand on my photography and video I decided to film and shoot writers. It provided a never ending subject and a way to try out new video and photo techniques since there are always people painting.

Tell us a story of when you followed a graffiti writer out on a mission?
Recently in London I was out with some mates, just doing little bits. As we were going about, one of them noticed a CCTV camera tilting in our direction. We quickly moved down the street and saw the other CCTV cameras were following us. At that point we all started splitting ways. Within less than 5 mins from the first camera noticing us, feds had pulled up. Those who were still around ran and everyone made it out fine. I’m still relatively new to London, and that was the first time I experienced how the “big brother” camera system of London works.

Do you have any other projects you work on?
I have ongoing working projects with Tar Street Sports, On The Run, and a few other, non graff projects. Some writers from a big crew here are dropping a book, and I’ve shot and now editing a video for them to accompany the book launch. I’m also working with a writer who has a gallery show coming up, and we’re creating a process video of the canvases and exploring a lot of editing techniques. I have a few graffiti videos in mind that are more thematic, or linked through a common idea, shot type or effect that I want to work on

Who or what inspires you in photography?
I try to always have a photo or video project on the go or in mind. That way I’m constantly in a production phase of a project, always having a project in mind helps me stay creative. I’ve been learning a lot from the talented videographers and photographers I’ve been working with recently as well, which has provided a ton of inspiration.

Do you have photography as your profession?
More so videography, but yes.

What equipment do you use?
I have a Panasonic Lumix GH5, Tokina 11-20mm, Tamron 24-70mm, a DJI Mavic Air and a few other bits. I also have a Minolta X-700 and a few lenses for analogue photos.

Three words that describe your photographs?
Active, raw, brisk

Do you have any favorite city in the world and why?
So far it’s Lisbon, very chill and nice city that has a bit of everything.

Natural VS artificial light, which do you prefer working with?
Natural light, however I find myself becoming more interested in artificial / controlled light and about the potential it can have.

What do you do when not taking pictures?
I cycle a lot, a good way to clear your head and get out of the city.

What do you think of social media, give us your thoughts on the positive and negative side of it?
I find people place too much importance on it. Get what you can out of it, but also know when to leave it alone.

Personalia presents some of the most active and prominent graffiti writers from Sweden and depicts their lifestyle.
For four years photographer Janne Riikonen infiltrated the Swedish graffiti scene by photographing writers and following them on missions. Gradually he got accepted into the scene, and got to meet hundreds of writers all across the country. The static photographs present writers as the people they are and invites the readers to a private meeting with them.
